With a background and focus on large-scale textile installations, designer Elodie Blanchard challenged herself with scale and design in creating her new line of upholstery fabrics for HBF Textiles.

“My HBF Textiles collection is guided by two principles,” Blanchard explains. “First, each fabric is treated as an individual character on its own terms. Second, each fabric must interact with and benefit the HBF Textiles collection, as a whole.”

With this in mind, Blanchard divided her collection into three parts:

·         Texture – Forge, Foundation and Twist

·         Geometric Patterns – Braids and Bars, Dot Structure and Moving Blanket

·         Conceptual Ideas – Remember and Remember Houndstooth.

Imagined as metal-mesh furniture covering, Forge mimics the high-tech fabrics that Elodie uses in her fiber installations. Forge’s colorations reflect metallic hues – gold, pewter, platinum, copper, silver, nickel and steel. This Sunbrella-certified performance fabric features vinyl-coated yarns, which are suitable for both indoor and outdoor use.

Foundation’s subtle grid of boucle rayon threads discreetly pop out, evoking a feeling of a distressed velvet rug that grows increasingly beautiful with time. Foundation features a palette of earthy, sophisticated hues that create tantalizing, natural texture. The depth of this solution-dyed, recycled-polyester, ring-spun chenille gives Foundation a sumptuous tactile quality, as well its bleach-cleanable properties.

Twist, a soft, comfortable fabric reminiscent of a favorite old, tried-and-true sweater you would never part with, is at once both elegant and nubby. Twist upholsters beautifully and features pigments ranging from complex neutral tweeds to vibrant, fresh hues. This textural combination includes acrylic/cotton for wool-like bulk, linen for fine texture and polyester for a twist of strength.

Inspired by hand-stitched, felt pillows adorned with ribbons, braids and hand-stitched bars that Blanchard crafts in her studio, the new Braids and Bars fabric is the designer’s woven translation of these creations. Featuring a clean, crisp, linear graphic composition, Braids and Bars offers unique, innovative color combinations that give designers everything from a subtle grey to the perfect bright.

A Turrell exhibition at the Guggenheim left Blanchard keenly focused on optical illusions. Combining this with inspiration from geodesic domes and the work of Buckminster Fuller, she began to play with layers of patterns and designs, bringing the new Dot Structure fabric to life.  It features a grid of triangles with strategic dot placements to create a subtle hexagonal shape at intersections. Depending on the contrast level of the colors specified, from crisp brights to elegant neutrals, the pattern’s negative space can vary in prominence. Dot Structure is constructed of indoor/outdoor-suitable Sunbrella yarns and is bleach cleanable.

Moving Blanket is inspired by the simplicity of its name – a moving blanket. Designed with a chevron pattern using a matelassé structure to enhance its padded construction, this elegant reinterpretation of a classic material features both large- and thin-stitched lines inspired by artist Sol Lewitt’s drawings and focuses on contrast. Hues within the Moving Blanket lines range from vibrant brights to globally inspired tones.

After visiting a premier mill source with HBF Textiles, Blanchard found herself moved by the almost-photographic detail level that the mill could achieve by using its extremely fine warp and fill yarns. Based on art strips of personal memories – her wedding dress, her son’s blanket, a favorite pair of trousers – that Blanchard sews together in her studio, her new Remember fabric reflects a woven interpretation of these materials. The end result is a surreal sense of texture, rendered by the mill as stripes of photographic representations of her fondest recollections in crisp black-and-white.  Remember comes standard with a Nano-Tex stain-resistant performance finish.

Remember Houndstooth, a pull-out design from Blanchard’s Remember fabric, is enlarged 200 percent to create an all-over, large-scale, classic black-and-white houndstooth. It can stand alone or work in coordination with Remember. Additional colors are available with a minimum special order of 200 yards per color. Remember Houndstooth also comes standard with a Nano-Tex stain-resistant performance finish.
