In January 2003 Michael Koch founded his own consulting firm, Michael Koch Designs, with the vision of expanding his creating potential. His projects include working with American and European mills, developing silk jacquards in India and designing hand-knotted rugs in Thailand. He is also collaborating on a hand woven silk collection produced in Cambodia.
In 2004 Michael and his partner Andrew Kohler purchased a specialty dobby and yarn twisting mill located in Los Angeles - rechristened LA Mills. Owning his own looms and working with his own materials gives Michael the freedom to expand the limits of manufacturing in the USA, something he is proud and excited to be doing.
Formerly Michael was Executive Vice President and Director of Design at Wearbest Sil-Tex Mills, a domestic jacquard weaver. There he designed and developed patterns for HBF Textiles and other industry leaders. Prior to this venture Koch was a senior designer ar Jack Lenor Larsen.
Michael is an honor graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design where he continues to consult with the textile department and give senior and graduate crits. Along with two of his fellow alumni he has recently established a RISD textile scholarship fund.
